Just... just WHY!? The look of the film is nearly perfect, yet the story is just so horrid. They were SO close! Why did they just lag on the story? They should have done a history with the mansion or something! Just why did they have to get the story so ... it just didn't fit.
I know the downfall of the movie. Eddie Murphy. ... what more can I say? It just doesn't work! No! NONONONONONONONONONONONONONONONONONONONONO! Do. not. want!
Okay... I think I'm calm enough now. I just had to get that out of my system. Goodness. THEY WERE JUST SO CLOSE! Okay... I just need to breathe.

And--I know I risk a lot of backlash for this--but one thing the HM has over all of the Pirates flicks is this: Pacing. It moves along at a good click, whereas I always felt the PotC films dragged horribly at times. (But then again, I always felt the same way about Nightmare Before Christmas, that some scenes should have hit the cutting room floor or been shortened some how. I know I'm in a minority on that aspect.) It's not that I don't have a long attention span, I do. It's my inner editor screaming, "YOU COULD SAY THAT IN HALF THE WORDS! THIS SCENE ISN'T ESSENTIAL TO THE STORY! WE GET IT ALREADY!"
Eddie Murphy can be cringe inducing to watch, like even he knows it's too cornball. And Jennifer Tilly as Madame Leota... *face palm* Not even close to Eleanor Audley's voice. Glenn Close or Susan Sarandon could have been a lot better, I think.
My biggest gripe, though, is the story. I could have been content with Eddie Murphy if that story wasn't one big clusterf@(k.
What is the thing with Elizabeth/Sara? We don't know. It's not reincarnation in any sense I've ever read about it. Do they just look a whole lotta like? And how does Ramsley, a mere ghost, have the power to summon demonic forces from Hell? Where did that little bit of juju come from? And who made Master Gracey's hair look so god-awful at the end? And why'd he steal Sergeant Pepper's uniform?

I think the Sarah thing was one of the biggest downfalls. If they had them just come to the mansion and find out the history etc it may have gone by better.
I actually have the soundtrack on my I-pod and I adore it. The look of the film is everything a mansion fan could want, it's the story that is just so awful.
